In the Mix Monday--PMS Craving (Salt, Sugar and Fat)

According to HelloLife, a website that offers (among other health related info) support groups, a Q&A page, articles and more related to PMS and PMDD, "70% [of menstruating women] experience PMS related bloating, food cravings, irritability, mood swings, and sleep disturbances." The HelloLife article on PMS and food cravings gives a great detailed explanation of why we often crave either sugar and fat or salty foods during PMS. For the detes click here, otherwise, the jist of it is that our fluctuating horomones are to blame--during PMS our bodies are trying to balance themselves and these food cravings are a result of that pursuit.

If you're like me then food cravings during your Ladies Holiday can leave you feeling like an addict going through withdrawals and willing to do just about anything to get your fix--only the thing you're looking for is a legal fix of salt or a luscious combo of sugar and fat. "Hello, my name is Tamar, and I am a sugar addict." Well I can tell you from experience, Toots, that feeding that craving with simple sugars, unhealthy fats or a whopping dose of table salt will not improve your PMS related mood swings. In fact, from what I've read in numerous articles on the subject over the years since I started menstruating (22 years to be exact) giving in to these cravings can actually increase the painful cramps and bloating that often accompany your Ladies Holiday. What's a gal to do?

The good news is that now that you understand a bit about what's happening in your body you can take charge. Use that PMS induced feisty nature to fight for yourself and your well-being, the same way that you would fight for your best friend if she was being talked about behind her back, your child if he were being bullied, or your Mama if someone tried a "Your Mama..." joke on you! Especially during Ladies Holiday, we women need to put ourselves at the top of our priority lists. One day my sister-in-law happened to stop by while I was having a particularly trying time, after I vented all my frustrations, she looked at me with empathy and then without saying a word she walked over to our the white board in my kitchen (which I use to write daily messages to my family) and wrote in big letters "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy! ~Unknown" Ladies, you know she's right!

For this, and a few other important reasons, I've recently begun a quest to eat a more clean diet. I want to be better to my body and my soul than I have been known to be. You can read more about that here, if you like. In my quest for a cleaner way of eating, I have found a great "fix" for my sweet, salty, and fat cravings all wrapped in one and the best part is that it satisfies me deliciously without negatively affecting my system. Huzzah!!!

Here's just one example of a healthy alternative. Enter naturally sweet, and naturally lightly salty, healthy fat: coconut butter!!

  1. Funny reading this post and I've just finished eating a brownie. I don't get cramps of bloating any more but when I was younger I use to get horrible pain just before I got my period, luckily it hasn't happened since I had my son. Love the quote, so true! mmm coconut butter, I want. Have a great week x
