Thrifty Fashion & How Tamar Got Her Groove Back

Deirdre & Tamar, Copyright 2012
My gal Deirdre is so stylish. No matter if it's a trip to the library or a night out on the town, I can always tell that she puts care into how she presents herself...and I can also tell that it is effortless. She just has a knack for understanding what looks good and how to piece an outfit together. I can't imagine her spending hours in front of a mirror trying on outfits or plastering on make-up. What I do imagine is that her well trained eye can spot a good combo in her closet in seconds and then she's ready to go. She always looks fresh, stylish, and oh so comfortable in her own skin. Can you tell that I revere her? She is my fashion guru, among many other things that make her one of my most favorite people in the Universe. ;)

Something that I have found truly inspirational as I've watched Dee over the years, is that she doesn't spend tons of money on clothes. She is thrifty and organized. While truthfully, I would be most comfortable spending most days in yoga pants and a tank top, when I go out into the world I do want to present more of a sense of who I am as a woman. I want to feel confident, cool, and genuinely me. I can recognize good fashion, but I do not have a spare dime to put into my wardrobe. Luckily for me, I have some pretty fashionable friends who have handed down clothes to me over the years...I treasure each piece. On top of that, I do make the occasional trip to the thrift store and have been known to spend an embarrassing amount of time picking through the fabulous clearance racks at Target. Speaking of which, Target is the only store that I by "new" clothes from, I love pretty much everything they have to offer and although the prices are already good, the clearance racks are THE way to go. The turnover rate at that place is astounding, and I have often been lucky enough to find on the clearance rack a piece that had been in the new section only weeks before. $2.88 or $4.75 on a fabulous piece is so exhilarating!

So it turns out, that in my mammoth pile of clothes...a mixture of clearance finds, thrift finds, and hand me downs, I actually have a pretty good wardrobe to work with. It's putting things together that is sometimes tricky. I don't take the time. I lack inspiration.

But recently...I have taken a few tips from my gal Deirdre and have begun to find inspiration. Then, check this out, the other day I was flipping through a somewhat recent magazine that I had found in the free magazine pile at my local library. I came upon this ad:

Ahhhh....so that's what a Maxi Dress is! Deirdre had said something about one of those recently and I had no idea what she meant. As I looked at the ad more closely, I realized that I had all the makings of this outfit in my bedroom upstairs. Well, my Fella and I had been surprised with the chance for a date night that very night so I decided to try and throw this thing together.

These adorable espadrilles were a Target clearance find a couple of years ago. I rarely wear them...I didn't know what to wear them with! But I love them.

The necklace was given to me, not really my style, but I have hung onto it thinking that maybe it would come in handy some day. Guess it did!

Oh my beloved denim jacket. I have had this one since college. I remember it so well. It called to me from the window of Pac-Sun at the mall. I ogled it for weeks. It cost $55. I sooooo did not have $55 for this purpose. My birthday rolled around though...and someone got it for me as a gift. I have taken very good care of it and once in a while I still wear it and feel cool. :)

So there's all the accessories, but what about that Maxi dress, you ask? Well, a friend handed down a floor length cotton dress to me recently. It is a deep orange and I love it. I've only worn it once though. It's one of those things you have to be feeling bold enough for. Well today I was feeling bold. I was going on a date with my Fella! Wahoo!!

So here I was, all dazzled up and feeling so awesome about finding all these pieces to put together. I wore the outfit while I brought the kids to the babysitter's. Did I mention that it was 90+ degrees out that day? Needless to say, as much as I loved the ensemble and as bold as I was feeling...my legs were dang HOT and not in sexy way. I couldn't do it. I just couldn't. But you know what happened next? It was like I was on a fashion inspiration roll. Figuring out how to put this awesome outfit together, I was able to think up a whole new outfit for my night out in a flash. Something that wouldn't leave me in a sweat! Another couple of clearance finds (the top and the shoes) and a thrift store find (skirt.)

My Fella said he felt like a shmuck next me, but I am always dazzled by him and was just happy to be feeling so fabulous in my own skin for once. The date was fantastic...even if I did eat some things I shouldn't have  (you can read more about that here.)

Here he is holding my hand and wearing his old geek t-shirt (an alien made out of the numbers 1 and 0...something to do with binary??) I love him in black. And yes, that is baby Violet, along for date night with us. We were at the most delicious pizza place on the planet. If you live anywhere near Providence, RI get thee to Cacerta's!!! The pizza tastes just like author Elizabeth Gilbert's description (in her book Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia ) of the pizza she had in Rome!

If you feel like you are in a fashion rut, don't give up! Look around you for inspiration and then go back to the closet, you may find that everything you need for a great outfit is already there, you just have to put it together in a way you may not have thought of before!

Feeling Fine,
Tamar

You'll notice that I was not "fashiony" enough to remove my beloved tibetan beaded bracelet, which totally did not go with the outfit. Also, my feet were in major need of a pedi and had no business seeing the light of day. But you know what? Who cares! It's a work in progress and I haven't felt this fabulous in a long time!!
