Best Playdough Ever!

home-made playdough

Whether you have little ones at home or older kids who need something creative to do when they get back from school, playdough is great for all ages.  I got the best recipe ever at a play group when my kids were little.  It's so good that I made it for my kids' preschool teacher even after they were no longer in her class because she loved it so much. That and she is a really special lady.

There are several things I like about home made playdough.  You can make it with your kids which only adds to the fun.  You can make it any color you wish, and as much of it as you want.  It lasts way longer than the store bought kind.  I have had great luck getting it out of my carpet, when it's completely dry you can just scrape it and vacuum. I have also had really good luck getting it out of the dog's fur LOL! Also if my kids get it on their clothes it comes off easily in the wash.

In a large pot mix:

3 cups flour
1 1/2 cups salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar

In a separate bowl combine:

3 cups water
3 tablespoons cooking oil
food coloring

Add liquid to dry mixture in a pot and mix well.  Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until dough pulls away from the sides.  Roll onto a table, cool and knead until dough is smooth.

I have found that adding the food coloring to the mixture before cooking helps you get a better, smoother, more consistant color.  Trying to add it after it's cooked is messy.  I have also found that the concentrated gel coloring (like Wilton's) gives you more vibrant or deep color.

I usually let my kids help me put the ingredients together then I do the stirring over the hot stove part.  Then once it has cooled enough to touch I let them knead it smooth.  They thinks it's fun to play with it while it's still sort of warm.

This can be stored in plastic zip top bags, or I just bought some plastic containers with lids at the dollar store.  The containers are easily cleaned after each batch, stored easily in my cupboard and the playdough stays fresh. And I'm not throwing more plastic bags away.

Have fun and enjoy!  If you have any good recipes for arts and crafts please share them!
